Shannon Bream opens up about years of pain, mental health struggle, and the faith that carried her through

Fox News anchor Shannon Bream is speaking candidly about one of the most painful chapters of her life, describing a prolonged health crisis that left her physically exhausted and emotionally depleted.

In an interview with The U.S. Sun, the 55-year-old attorney-turned-broadcaster reflected on a period marked by severe eye pain, sleepless nights, and what she has openly acknowledged were moments of suicidal ideation. She said the ordeal tested her resilience and deepened her faith in ways she never expected.

The condition began roughly 15 years ago, just before she turned 40. The pain was so intense that she often slept no more than one or two hours at a time. As she previously shared with People, the struggle pushed her into a mental health battle that left her feeling without hope.

“It was a very dark period in my life, and it took a long time to get a proper diagnosis,” Bream told The U.S. Sun.

A long search for answers

In 2019, Bream told People that doctors ultimately diagnosed her with chronic erosion syndrome compounded by corneal map-dot fingerprint dystrophy. The disorder causes layers of cells on the cornea to tear, triggering sudden and extreme pain.

There is no cure for the condition. Bream said she experimented with numerous treatments before establishing a regimen that helped manage the symptoms.

A turning point came in 2017, when corrective laser surgery eliminated her need for contact lenses — a change she described as life-altering.

“It really gave me my life back,” she said. While she still experiences occasional discomfort overnight, she noted that the episodes now pass quickly and no longer involve hours of agony, double vision, or migraines.

Throughout the ordeal, Bream said her Christian faith remained central. “I prayed fervently, and even though He didn’t answer in exactly the way I had hoped – He did give me a way through,” she said, adding that the experience strengthened both her belief and her compassion for others facing overwhelming challenges. She also said, “God was faithful through all of it.”

Faith at the center of a new book

Bream is preparing to release her latest book, Nothing Is Impossible with God, through Fox News Books on March 10. The nonfiction work examines the lives of 11 biblical figures and centers on the idea that while life may not be easy, God promises presence and guidance during difficult times.

The book’s overview describes it as “an encouraging reminder” that divine blessings can exceed expectations and that “nothing is impossible with Him.” It aims to offer reassurance and spiritual support to readers confronting hardship.

Bream previously became a New York Times bestselling author with The Women of the Bible Speak, and her newest release continues that exploration of faith through storytelling.

By sharing her own account of pain, doubt, and perseverance, Bream is presenting her story not as one of instant healing, but of endurance — and of finding strength in belief when circumstances seemed unbearable.
