Savannah Guthrie’s Today future cast into doubt as executive delivers blunt nine-word assessment
Savannah Guthrie’s long-standing role on NBC’s Today is facing renewed uncertainty as the search for her missing mother continues in Arizona.
The veteran anchor has been absent from the morning program since her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was taken from her home in Tucson. Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31 and was reported missing the following day. As the investigation approaches its fourth week, Savannah has remained off the air.
While the search effort remains active, attention inside television circles has increasingly shifted to what her extended absence could mean for the future of Today.
“I can’t imagine she would even want to”
According to Status News, one television executive offered a stark assessment of Savannah’s potential return. “I can’t imagine she would even want to [return]” the executive said, describing a scenario in which a comeback to the show seems unlikely.
That nine-word statement has fueled speculation that her tenure, which began in 2012, could be nearing an abrupt turning point.
Another executive told the outlet that losing Savannah would be a major blow, stating, “If you could pick one person across the span of morning TV that a show would not want to lose, it would be Savannah.” The same source described her as “the glue” of the program, suggesting her absence has altered the dynamic of the anchor team.
Page Six separately reported that no formal decision has been made and that network leadership is evaluating the situation week by week. A source told the publication that Savannah’s current focus is entirely on her family and that she is not thinking about work at this time. The outlet also noted there is no long-term plan in place to permanently replace her.

The investigation continues
Meanwhile, investigators in Tucson continue working the case. Earlier this week, authorities revealed that a glove discovered near Nancy’s residence — appearing similar to one seen in surveillance footage outside the home — did not yield any DNA matches during analysis. Officials have ruled out Savannah, her brother Camron, her sister Annie, and their spouses as suspects.
Savannah addressed the public in a recent Instagram video, urging anyone with information to come forward. “It is never too late to do the right thing,” she said. “And we are here. And we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, that it’s never too late.”
An ex-FBI agent has publicly discussed what was described as a hidden codeword in her appeal, and a man claiming to have knowledge of Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper has said he wants Bitcoin.
For now, Savannah Guthrie remains off Today, and the executive’s blunt assessment has left her future on the program firmly in question as the search for her mother continues.
