Instead, the spotlight is on the possibility—arguably the inevitability—of LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, stepping onto the court as teammates for the Los Angeles Lakers. This historic moment would mark the first time in NBA history that an active father and son duo play together on the same team.
The Lakers’ decision to draft Bronny in April has sparked ongoing debate and scrutiny, yet it appears the franchise is poised to make a strategic move that could shape the 19-year-old’s burgeoning career.
Lakers make Bronny decision
According to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, the Los Angeles Lakers are planning to start Bronny James’ season in the developmental G League, with the expectation that he’ll spend much, if not all, of the 2024/25 season playing for the South Bay Lakers.
Despite an impressive showing in the Summer League, incoming head coach J.J. Redick had already indicated that Bronny would likely spend time in the G League as a rookie.
At this stage in his development, competing for minutes as a rookie won’t be easy, given the Lakers’ guard depth, which includes D’Angelo Russell, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie, and Austin Reaves.
Additionally, recent first-round picks Dalton Knecht and Jalen Hood-Schifino are expected to be prioritized for NBA minutes ahead of Bronny, despite his high-profile lineage.
Though LeBron James might not be thrilled about this development for his son, his focus is currently on leading Team USA to a gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Team USA is set to face Nikola Jokic and Serbia on Thursday, with a spot in the gold medal game at stake.
