Giannis Antetokounmpo has once again been a central figure in the NBA playoffs, but not for reasons he would have preferred. For the second consecutive year, he has faced the crucial moments of the season with physical issues; so much so that this time he didnโt even participate in the series that the Milwaukee Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers 4-2.
When asked about a potential return during the postseason, the Greek player admitted that he was far from ready.
“I did everything I could to return and help my teammates. It’s a bit hard to see them out there and not be able to help, but I simply couldn’t. I went through all the tests and followed the necessary protocols, but I wasnโt even close to meeting the requirements. I wasn’t close to coming back,” he explained.
The fact that injuries are preventing him from competing as he wishes is a concern for Giannis and the franchise. The two-time NBA MVP acknowledges that it might be time for changes to ensure a more positive future.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s time to follow a different pattern. Maybe try different things. I don’t like the word โrestโ. If I can play, I will play. If I can’t, then I canโt. I will definitely sit down and think about what my summer will look like and what the next year will be like,” he declared.
NEXT SEASON
Despite the disappointment of being eliminated in the first round, Giannis chooses to remain measured and acknowledges the importance of context; so much so that he believes there’s a real chance to be champions in the future if everyone is healthy.
“Obviously, it doesn’t feel good. The wound is fresh; it’s open. You’ve just lost in the first round. But I’m not someone who makes excuses. Right now, I believe that when Khris, Dame, and Brook Lopez will come back on the court and we are all healthy, we will be the best offense in the NBA,” he emphasizes.
