Why was President Trump criticized over choice of outfit at Pope Francis’ Funeral?

On April 26, former U.S. President Donald Trump attended the funeral of Pope Francis, joining more than 200,000 mourners gathered at St. Peterโ€™s Square in the Vatican.

While the event itself was a solemn occasion, Trump’s appearance quickly sparked controversy online, with many criticizing his choice of attire.

Accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, the former president wore a blue suit and tie to the service. In contrast, Melania paid tribute to traditional Vatican protocol by wearing a carefully selected, custom all-black ensemble designed by Dolce & Gabbana.

Her outfit included a silk georgette mantilla, lace gloves, a wool double-breasted coat, and pointed stiletto pumps, projecting a message of deep respect and mourning.

Despite Melaniaโ€™s praise for her elegant and appropriate outfit, attention quickly turned to Donald Trumpโ€™s blue suit, which many considered out of place for the occasion. After images and videos from the funeral began circulating online, social media users were quick to voice their disapproval.

“In a blue suit. The disrespect is incredible,” one observer wrote, echoing the sentiments of many. Another questioned, “Why is he wearing blue at a funeral?” while a third frustrated viewer exclaimed, “Trump wore the wrong suit!!”

Traditionally, dark colors like black are expected at Catholic funerals, particularly for significant figures such as the Pope. Trump’s decision to wear blue instead of black was seen by some as a sign of disrespect, further fueling criticism during an already emotional event.

While the former First Ladyโ€™s appearance was widely praised for its adherence to Vatican tradition, Donald Trumpโ€™s wardrobe choice stood out for all the wrong reasons, adding an unexpected layer of controversy to the somber day.
