Usha Vance opens up about balancing motherhood and public life: “Grateful for the time I have”

As America celebrated Mother’s Day 2025, Second Lady Usha Vance offered rare and heartfelt insight into what the holiday means to her — and how she strives to keep her family life grounded despite the spotlight.

Speaking exclusively to Fox News Digital, Usha reflected on the unique balance she now maintains.

“The balancing act today is sometimes easier than it was when I was working full-time in the private sector because I have more control over my schedule and do not feel pulled in as many directions,” she shared. “That said, raising children in the public eye poses new challenges.”

Usha, a highly accomplished attorney who previously clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, is now focused on ensuring that home life remains as normal as possible for her family.

“While I certainly miss working, I am grateful that I have the time to ensure that our home life is as normal and stable as possible,” she said.

A Mother’s Lessons Passed Down

The Second Lady, married to Vice President JD Vance since 2014, is mother to three young children: Ewan (7), Vivek (5), and Mirabel (3).

Reflecting on her own upbringing, Usha spoke lovingly of her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri.

“My mom does not often give direct advice, but I’ve learned from her example in countless ways,” she said. “One of her gifts as a parent is always making me feel like I have her full attention, no matter how busy she might be, and I’ve tried very hard to make my children feel the same way.”

Usha’s dedication to family life isn’t new.

Long before becoming Second Lady, she and JD Vance built their marriage on mutual respect, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for faith and tradition.

Their shared journey — from meeting at Yale Law School to blending Indian and American family customs — continues to shape the values they pass down to their children today.

Celebrating Mother’s Day in the Vance Household

The Vances celebrated the holiday quietly, opting for a peaceful family hike and a special homemade dessert.

Vice President JD Vance — with a little help from the kids — baked Usha a hazelnut brown butter cake to mark the occasion.

“I shared an early Mother’s Day celebration with military mothers at the White House,” Usha said, referencing Thursday’s special event with First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump honoring military families. “But on Sunday we will have a quiet day, with a family hike and dessert baked by JD.”

The children had already given their gifts — handmade presents from preschool that they were too excited to keep secret.

On Sunday, Usha posted a heartfelt message to Instagram, alongside family photos and cards from her kids.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers (especially my own)! You deserve to be celebrated every day, but especially today,” she wrote.

A New Chapter

Since stepping away from her high-powered legal career at Munger, Tolles and Olson, Usha has embraced her dual role as a mother and Second Lady with poise and gratitude.

“As long as I was working really hard at things that I cared about, that’s what mattered,” she said in a prior interview.

For Usha, the mission is simple: to build a strong foundation of love, attention, and normalcy for the next generation — even while standing alongside her husband in one of America’s highest offices.
