Early Life and Education
Tony Danza was born as Antonio Salvatore Iadanza on April 21, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a working-class Italian-American family. His father was a garbage collector, and his mother was a bookkeeper.
Tony attended Malverne High School in Malverne, New York, and later went on to study at the University of Dubuque in Iowa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history.
Boxing Career
Before becoming a well-known actor, Tony Danza was a professional boxer. He fought under the name “Dangerous Tony Danza” and had a respectable record of 9 wins and 3 losses.
His boxing career was cut short when he was discovered by a television producer while working out at a boxing gym.
Breakthrough Role
Tony Danza’s big break came in 1978 when he was cast as Tony Banta, a cab driver and part-time boxer, in the popular television series “Taxi.”
The show ran for five seasons and earned critical acclaim, helping to establish Danza as a talented comedic actor.
“Who’s the Boss?”
After “Taxi,” Tony Danza landed another iconic role as Tony Micelli in the sitcom “Who’s the Boss?” The show aired from 1984 to 1992 and became a huge hit, cementing Danza’s status as a beloved television star. His portrayal of a retired baseball player turned housekeeper won him numerous fans and accolades.
