According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded around 11:40 p.m. when Hughes noticed the group outside his home. Authorities told local outlet 11Alive that the teenagers were allegedly “rolling” toilet paper across the property.

When Hughes stepped outside to confront them, the teens began returning to their vehicles in an attempt to leave the area.

During the chaotic moment, Hughes reportedly tripped and fell into the roadway.

As one of the vehicles drove away, an 18-year-old driver struck Hughes with a pickup truck.

Emergency responders transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Despite medical treatment, Hughes died from his injuries the following day.

Driver charged as investigation continues

Authorities identified the driver as 18-year-old Jayden Wallace, who now faces several criminal charges connected to the incident.

According to reports cited by The New York Post and WSBTV, Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property. If convicted of the most serious charge, he could face a prison sentence of three to fifteen years.

Investigators said Wallace and two other teenagers stopped after the collision and attempted to help Hughes while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

Wallace is currently being held on a $1,950 bond, according to jail records reviewed by The Post.

Four other teenagers who were allegedly involved in the prank — Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz, all 18 — were also arrested outside Hughes’ home. They face misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and littering on private property.

Authorities have said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it remains unclear why Hughes’ home was targeted that night.
