Spalletti reacts to the heavy defeat by England: “We started well, but then…”

The coach in the post-match interview: “We need to pay more attention to counterattacks; today we conceded too much.”

Luciano Spalletti experienced his first defeat as Italy’s head coach. It’s not all to be discarded, as the coach admited, although there is a bit of disappointment after taking the lead and not managing it well.

“We had a good performance throughout the entire 90 minutes. Of course, the result says another thing. We paid dearly for their counterattacks, which posed significant challenges for us. It’s normal to concede counterattacks when you play a physical style of football.”

“But not everything should be discarded today; in fact, I received many positive responses from the players regarding their teamwork and much more. We started the game really well, but some adjustments need to be made because we suffered a lot in terms physical strength, and we weren’t able to anticipate their ideas.

We need to be able to look beyond just the nearest pass; we should expect the suffocating aggression of the opponents and not be affraid by it– too many times, we were caught off guard. We had a good match, but we allowed things that you simply can’t allow to England, as they promptly capitalize on them.”
