The adventure of Luciano Spalletti on the Italy’s bench starts with a draw 1-1: away against North Macedonia.
Luciano Spalletti’s debut with his new Italy ends in a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia. It all happened in the second half when Immobile put the Azzurri on the scoreboard with a header, before the home team responded just before the end of the match, with a beautiful free-kick goal by Enis Bardhi.
Spalletti explained to Sky Sport after the match: “From this match, we will take home only the performance, because that’s what matters. We tried to play as we prepared for it during our workouts, but overall we could have played a better game.
“Sadly the pitch was not in a good shape and lowered our quality. It’s a bad result because we could have won. It was a decent game, and we will have to start working from here.”
“I had too many players with yellow cards on the field… we had only three days to prepare for the match and now against Ukraine it will be crucial for the standings and a possible qualification. There’s a lot of work to be done.
Then speaking to Rai Sport, Spalletti also commented on the emotions of this debut: Did I sleep at all?
“I always sleep very little, but it doesn’t depend on the debut. It’s clear that there’s a bit of emotion because when the national team plays it’s never just a regular game played, but a game that all the Italians watch all over the world, so what we do on the field can be seen by everyone.”
