Southgate after Italy win: “We want to win against Big teams. This was the toughest group”

Once again England make qualifying for a major tournament look easy.

Gareth Southgate’s squad overcame an initial goal deficit to secure their spot at Euro 2024 in Germany with two matches to spare, prevailing 3-1 over Italy. They’ve maintained an unblemished record in qualifiers, suffering a sole defeat in 24 years, a 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic in 2019.

Nonetheless, Southgate is convinced that his team can achieve more. He expressed, “We must triumph in our upcoming two games to ensure the first position. There’s still room for growth within this squad.”

“This qualifying group presented formidable challenges, although we’ve faced criticism for not defeating big teams frequently, we’ve consistently delivered strong performances.”

“Our aim is to win against the highest-caliber teams. This qualification group, featuring formidable opponents like Ukraine and Italy, has been exceptionally challenging, as well as North Macedonia, who have been performing well in the last campaigns.

“Our key assets lie in our strong mentality, technically skilled players, and physical prowess. However, it’s important that we continue to win big games. In the second half, we seized control of the game, adeptly navigating through the opponent’s press and showing remarkable composure to build our attacks and maintain possession.”
