The Argentine coach: “I’m happy that both of us have already advanced to the next round.” Then, a revelation about the future.
Diego Simeone’s press conference lasted 7 minutes, on the eve of the Atletico Madrid challenge against Lazio. Both teams are already qualified for the Champions League knockout stage, but Wednesday night’s match at the Wanda Metropolitano will determine the group’s top spot (kickoff at 21:00).
“I will never forget what the Biancocelesti have given me – admitted Cholo. I love Lazio a lot. I’m happy that both clubs have already advanced to the next round.”
Regarding potential lineup changes, Simeone stated, “We will assess it on a case-by-case basis; everyone must take responsibility. We are in good form now, having recently secured a victory against Almeria at home. Our Metropolitano stadium has an extraordinary fan base that gives us energy. We feel their support; we need them. The match against Lazio will be tough. We’ll try to sway it in our favor by exploiting their weaknesses. Morata is probably in one of his best moments; he is consistent, and it’s all to his credit. My influence is not the key.”
SIMEONE: “ONE DAY I WILL COACH IN ITALY”
In a subsequent interview with Sky Sport, Simeone also discussed his future: “I really like Italy; one day, I will coach there. I will return as a coach; I am sure of it. A revenge after the first leg late goal? No, we will take whatever comes. I certainly don’t envision an easy and quiet match. Despite a less than stellar domestic campaign, Lazio has performed well in the Champions League.”
