The Duke of Sussex has not had a permanent home in his homeland since he had to return to Frogmore Cottage.
After spending four years in the United States following his resignation from royal duties, Prince Harry is reportedly seeking to purchase a permanent home in the United Kingdom. His previous residence, Frogmore Cottage, might soon be replaced.
Royal expert and author Tom Quinn shared insights on Harry’s feelings. “As time goes by, Harry misses certain aspects of his old life in the UK. The initial excitement of everything being new in America is fading, and heโs starting to look back fondly on his past,” Quinn said in an interview with The Mirror.
Quinn also mentioned that Harry misses his army comrades and his old friends from Eton, who he has hardly seen since moving to the United States. There have been reports of tension between these friends and Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, which has added to the distance.
Despite these challenges, Harry is determined to establish his own permanent home in the UK. Quinn noted, “This is part of why Harry continues his legal efforts to have British taxpayers fund his security.”
This search for a new home highlights Harry’s enduring connection to his roots and his desire to find a balance between his life in America and his ties to the UK.
Frogmore Cottage: A Home Once Promised
Frogmore Cottage, a five-bedroom, 5,089-square-foot residence located in Home Park, Windsor, England, was gifted to Harry and Meghan by Queen Elizabeth II after their marriage. However, when they stepped down from their royal duties and left the Royal Family, they had to return the house.
In his autobiography “Spare,” Harry reflected on this, writing, “Once upon a time, this was going to be my home forever. Instead, it turned out to be just another brief stop.”
Harry’s feelings about Frogmore Cottage are more than just nostalgic. He and Meghan invested a substantial amount in a major renovation in 2019. Initially, the renovation costs were covered by taxpayer money, but the couple later repaid the expenses using their own funds.
Harry’s Fight for Security
Purchasing a house in the UK is just one step Prince Harry has taken to establish a permanent base in his homeland. Another ongoing battle is his request for automatic security whenever he visits the UK.
The UK’s Home Office revoked Harry and his family’s automatic right to security during their visits. Harry filed a lawsuit in the High Court but lost the case. Recently, he has taken his case to the Court of Appeals, hoping for a favorable resolution.
This legal struggle highlights Harry’s determination to ensure safety for himself and his family as they plan for a future that includes a permanent presence in the UK.
