“She was so brave”: 9-year-old girl fights for recovery after devastating shark attack in Florida

A summer beach day turned into every parent’s nightmare, but little Leah Lendel is fighting with courage few could imagine.

Nine-year-old Leah Lendel is recovering in a Florida trauma center after surviving a horrifying shark attack while snorkeling with her family off Boca Grande on June 11. The brutal encounter, believed to involve an eight-foot bull shark, left her right hand severed and her family scrambling to save her life.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack happened near noon, just off the beach. Leah suddenly surfaced from the water screaming and her right arm covered in blood.

“We heard somebody screaming, ‘Help! Help!’” recalled beachgoer Raynel Lugo.
“The water was turning red… it was pretty bad.”

Lugo and another bystander, Alfonso Tello, rushed to help. They initially thought it was a child playing. But when Leah emerged, visibly missing part of her hand, reality set in.

“When we saw that little girl come out of the water with no hand… everybody was in shock,” Tello told NBC.
“It was like something out of a nightmare.”

A Community Response — and a Mother’s Nightmare

Leah’s mother, Nadia Lendel, a mommy blogger with nearly 100,000 Instagram followers, was snorkeling nearby with her children when the attack occurred. Her screams for help echoed down the shoreline as others rushed to assist.

Construction workers on break used a beach towel to fashion a tourniquet, slowing the bleeding until paramedics arrived. Leah was airlifted 100 miles to Tampa by Life Flight for emergency surgery.

Her mother later shared an emotional update:

“Please keep our family in your prayers,” Nadia posted.
“Leah got bit by a shark today while snorkeling. She is undergoing surgery.”

A Miracle in the Operating Room

Doctors worked urgently to reattach Leah’s hand, using arteries from her leg to restore blood flow.

“Thank God she can move her fingers,” Nadia told CBS.
“They installed pins in her bones. There are still open tissues. They’ll be monitoring her here for a week.”

Her uncle, Max Derinsky, echoed the relief:

“The doctors were able to do some miracles and put her hand back together. But it will be a long road of recovery.”

Leah remains hospitalized and faces intensive physical therapy in the months ahead.

“She’s So Brave”: Community Rallies Around Leah

The Lendel family has since launched a GoFundMe to support Leah’s medical care. The fundraiser has already raised over $20,000, with donations pouring in from across the country.

“We’re thankful to Jesus for the quick response of emergency crews and the skill of the medical team,” the family wrote.
“She is now stable and fighting hard for her road to recovery.”

Witnesses described Leah’s courage as nothing short of extraordinary. Despite her injuries, she managed to emerge from the water bleeding and alert. It was a moment that left bystanders in stunned silence.

“She was walking outside with her hands out, bleeding like really bad,” Lugo said.
“She’s the same age as my daughter. She was so brave.”

A Dangerous Season — and a Mother’s Warning

The attack occurred during tarpon season, when shark activity increases around Boca Grande. Local officials say shark attacks remain rare, but this is the second incident Fire Chief CW Blosser has seen in his time, both during this same seasonal window.

Florida leads the U.S. in unprovoked shark bites, but cases like Leah’s are still extremely uncommon. Even so, local beachgoers say the incident has made many rethink how far they’ll venture into the water.

One Day at a Time

For now, the Lendel family is focused on Leah’s recovery and simply getting through each day.

“Emotional trauma. Physical therapy. Pain. And a two-month-old baby at home,” one supporter commented.
“They’re carrying more than anyone should have to.”

And yet, through it all, one thing is clear: Leah Lendel is a fighter.
