The 35-year-old guard, who was recently waived and bought out by the Utah Jazz, is expected to enhance the Nuggets’ backcourt depth. This acquisition follows a season where Westbrook averaged a career-low 11.1 points per game with the Clippers. Despite the dip in scoring, his defensive prowess remained strong, with Second Spectrum tracking data placing him fourth in field goal percentage allowed among players contesting over 300 shots last season.
The Nuggets’ interest in Westbrook is driven by the need for veteran experience in the backcourt, especially after the departures of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Reggie Jackson in free agency. Calvin Booth, the Nuggets’ general manager, highlighted this need in a recent interview with Altitude TV, stating, “We need some help in the backcourt. If we can add a high-level guard, we will be happy with that.”
