Shawn was a dream come trueโor so Jane thought. From the moment they met in the quiet aisles of the library, he seemed like the kind of man who had walked out of a romance novel. Thoughtful, attentive, and endlessly giving, Shawn made Jane feel like the only person in the world who mattered. People called him eccentric, but Jane found his quirks endearing.
When he proposed just three months later over candlelight and violins, there was no hesitation. Shawn was her person. Or so she thought.
The Wedding Day Change
The ceremony was picture-perfect. Shawn looked dashing in his tuxedo, and Jane felt like a princess in her flowing white gown. But something changed the moment they said, “I do.” The warmth in Shawnโs eyes flickered out like a dying flame. His words became clipped, his smile forced. He seemed more invested in entertaining his friends than being with her.
Jane brushed it off. Perhaps it was the stress of the day. But when Shawn whispered, โI have something special planned for you tonight,โ there was a strange edge to his voice that made her stomach churn. She told herself she was overthinking things. After all, wasnโt he the man who brought her hamburgers at odd hours just to make her happy? He adored her.
Right?
A Drive Into Darkness
Instead of heading to their apartment after the reception, Shawn took an unfamiliar turn down a winding road. โWhere are we going?โ Jane asked, her voice laced with unease.
โYouโll see,โ he replied, his face unreadable. โItโs a surprise.โ
Minutes turned into an hour. The further they drove, the darker and more desolate the surroundings became. Shawnโs demeanor didnโt helpโhe barely spoke, and when he did, his tone was distant. Jane clutched her dress, her palms clammy.
โShawn, please. Just tell me whatโs going on.โ
โTrust me,โ he said, but the words felt hollow. When he finally pulled into a secluded clearing, Janeโs heart pounded in her chest. She didnโt recognize the house in front of herโit was old, run-down, and eerily quiet.
Shawn stepped out of the car, walked around to her side, and blindfolded her. โNo peeking,โ he said with a smile that didnโt reach his eyes.
The Chilling Revelation
The creak of a heavy door and the smell of damp wood filled Janeโs senses as Shawn guided her inside. The blindfold was removed, and what Jane saw made her scream.
The walls were plastered with photos of womenโdozens of them, all staring blankly into the camera. Some were smiling, others looked terrified. Janeโs eyes landed on a large corkboard covered in newspaper clippings about missing persons. A shiver ran down her spine as she realized one of the photos looked disturbingly familiar.
โDo you recognize her?โ Shawn asked, his voice eerily calm. He pointed to a picture of a woman with long brown hair and kind eyes.
Jane couldnโt speak. Her throat tightened as her mind raced.
โThatโs my ex-wife,โ Shawn said casually, as though he were discussing the weather. โShe disappeared years ago. But I know she didnโt leave me. Someone took her. And Iโm going to figure out who.โ He turned to Jane, his eyes gleaming. โThatโs why I need you.โ
Her breath caught. โWhat…what are you saying?โ
โIโve been waiting for the right person to help me,โ he said, stepping closer. โSomeone who wouldnโt judge me. Someone who could see beyond the surface. Thatโs you, Jane.โ
The Escape
Janeโs instincts screamed at her to run, but she forced herself to stay calm. โShawn,โ she said carefully, โI think…I think we should go back and talk about this. Maybe get some help.โ
His face darkened. โHelp? I donโt need help. I need answers!โ His sudden outburst made her flinch.
Jane realized there was no reasoning with him. Her survival depended on her ability to outsmart him. She needed a way out.
โIโll help you,โ she said softly, forcing a smile. โYouโre right. I want to be there for you.โ
Shawnโs face softened, and he nodded. โI knew youโd understand.โ
As he turned away to adjust something on the corkboard, Janeโs eyes darted around the room. She spotted the door and edged closer to it, her heart hammering in her chest. Every step felt like an eternity.
When Shawn turned back around, Jane was gone.
She sprinted through the woods, her wedding dress snagging on branches and tearing. She could hear Shawn calling her name, his voice growing angrier with each shout. Adrenaline pushed her forward until she reached a main road. She flagged down a passing car, sobbing as she explained what had happened.
Leaving the Nightmare Behind
Jane never returned to the apartment she was supposed to share with Shawn. She went straight to the police and gave them all the details she could remember. When they investigated the house, they found more disturbing evidence linking Shawn to multiple missing persons cases. But Shawn himself was gone, vanishing like a ghost.
The man who had once been her dream turned out to be her worst nightmare. Though it took months of therapy and support from loved ones, Jane eventually began to heal. She moved to a new city, changed her number, and vowed never to let her guard down again.
Shawn may have stolen her trust, but he didnโt steal her courage. Jane survivedโand that was her greatest triumph.
