The Los Angeles Lakers have signed rookie coach JJ Redick to a 4 year deal. Thus ending the long search for a new coach
The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly found Darvin Ham’s replacement as head coach. Sources confirm to ESPN and The Athletic that former player J.J. Redick has been chosen to lead the team starting next season. The contract is said to be for four years.
The 39-year-old former player, who had transitioned into a TV analyst, was the Lakers’ second choice. Initially, they pursued Connecticut coach Dan Hurley, who turned down their offer of 6 years and $70 million.
This will be Redick’s first coaching experience at any level, including high school or college. He is moving directly from media work to the highest level of basketball.
The Lakers’ Uncertainty
Redick’s appointment comes amid significant uncertainty for the Lakers, who still don’t know if LeBron James will exercise his $51.4 million contract option for the next season or become a free agent.
Despite winning the new ‘NBA Cup,’ officially known as the ‘In-Season Tournament,’ the Lakers were thoroughly dominated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA playoffs, losing the series 4-1.
Redick played over 15 seasons in the NBA, primarily known as a shooter, excelling in three-point shooting and free throws. He was often used as a role player rather than a regular starter.
He played for the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Dallas Mavericks. Throughout his career, he averaged 12.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
