MSNBC fires Matthew Dowd over “disgusting” remarks after Charlie Kirk’s assassination

The tragic death of Charlie Kirk, 31, has shaken the nation, and now sparked a media scandal that cost veteran analyst Matthew Dowd his job at MSNBC.

Backlash Erupts On-Air

While covering breaking news of the shooting at Utah Valley University, Dowd stunned viewers with what many called “disgusting” remarks. He suggested the gunfire that fatally struck Kirk “could have been fired by one of his own supporters” and went on to call the activist “one of the most divisive younger figures… constantly pushing hate speech.”

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur pressed him further, but the commentary only drew more outrage. Clips of Kirk collapsing after being shot in the neck were already spreading across social media as Dowd spoke, making the tone all the more jarring.

Network Apology — Then Firing

By Wednesday afternoon, MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler issued a statement: “During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he.”

But hours later, Variety reported that Dowd had been let go from the network entirely.

Dowd himself posted a mea culpa on BlueSky, writing: “My thoughts & prayers are w/ the family and friends of Charlie Kirk… I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack.”

Critics Sound Off

The damage, however, was done. Outrage rolled in online, with one user writing: “That’s disgusting. Put your politics aside and have some humanity. Charlie is a person, a husband and father.”

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was even blunter: “Hey @MSNBC, I’m gonna go ahead and rule out that it was one of Charlie Kirk’s supporters that accidentally shot him with a celebratory gun shot.”

Trump’s Heartfelt Tribute

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” He added: “He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

The President also ordered all American flags to be lowered to half-staff until Sunday evening at 6pm EST in honor of Kirk.

A Family in Mourning

Kirk leaves behind his wife Erika, their 3-year-old daughter and 16-month-old son. The couple had just marked their fourth wedding anniversary in May.

For them, and for thousands of students who looked to Kirk as a mentor and fighter for conservative youth, the news of his death has been almost impossible to process.

Fallout Continues

What began as a campus rally meant to launch Kirk’s “Great American Comeback Tour” has instead spiraled into tragedy, political recriminations, and now a high-profile firing inside one of America’s biggest newsrooms.

As investigations by Utah authorities and the FBI continue, officials confirmed that an elderly man was initially detained in error and later a “person of interest” was questioned and released. The aftermath of Kirk’s death is being fought not just in courts and campuses, but on America’s airwaves as well.
