“We want to make our fellow citizens proud,” the Turkish national team coach Vincenzo Montella ahead of the European Championship who also spoke about his star player Hakan Calhanoglu.
“At this moment, Calhanoglu is the best midfielder in Italy, perhaps in the world,” said Vincenzo Montella, his coach with the Turkish national team, at the Euro Mediterranean Award ceremony at Campidoglio. “He has elevated himself on another level, we are happy to have him in our team.”
Staying on the topic of Serie A, when asked if Roma is a Champions League-caliber team, the coach responded, “They are becoming highly competitive, as the standings show.”
Regarding the Italian coaches at the upcoming European Championship, he emphasized, “We are 5; we are certainly well-recognized and well-prepared, and that is pleasing. In the past, I have always cheered for Italians abroad. As for my Turkey, for now, we are really happy.”
“It is the first time in history that we have won the qualifying group. Now, there is time to prepare for the Euros, a high-level competition that seems even more balanced than in the past. We definitely want to make a good impression.”
Finally, on the responsibility of playing in Germany, where there is a significant Turkish community: “We feel this responsibility; we recently played in Germany, and we felt like playing at home. We want to make our people proud,” Montella concludes.
