Mom slams critics after backlash over kids paying for dinner with their own Christmas money

A mom at the center of a viral parenting debate is pushing back after critics accused her of going too far.

UK-based mother-of-two Katie King, 31, found herself under intense scrutiny earlier this month after sharing a TikTok video showing her two young children enjoying a McDonald’s meal, paid for with their own Christmas money.

In the clip, King explained via text overlay that she had “made them pay for it” using cash they received over the holidays. The post quickly exploded, racking up over 1.2 million views and sparking a wave of backlash from viewers who labeled the decision “disgusting,” “sad,” and “so wrong.”

Why She Let Them Pay

Now, King is setting the record straight.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, she said the moment was never about denying her kids food, but about teaching them how money works.

“We home educate our kids and we try to incorporate learning into everyday living as much as possible,” she explained. “Teaching the value of money and money management is very important, and this was one of those times.”

King said her children, Louie, 8, and Arna, 5, each received about £8 (roughly $10) for Christmas, along with toys, LEGO sets, and even a new laptop between them. According to her, they were more than happy to spend a small portion of that money on a meal out.

“It was their choice and they wanted to,” she said. “They could have had a meal at home, but they opted for McDonald’s instead.”

A Lesson They’re Used To

King added that her children receive a weekly allowance for completing chores, meaning they’re already familiar with managing their own money.

“We teach them the importance of saving some, spending some, and in the future investing some,” she said, noting that her son often rethinks purchases once he realizes it will come out of his own pocket.

“He’ll ask for Pokémon cards or sweets, and when I say, ‘If you have enough money you can buy it,’ he’ll often stop and decide it’s not worth it.”

To King, that pause, that moment of consideration, is exactly the lesson she wants to instill.

Online Backlash Hits Hard

Despite her explanation, the reaction online was harsh. Commenters flooded her post with criticism, questioning why a parent would make children pay for food at all.

“Girl, you wanted them in this world but now you don’t want to pay for their food?” one user wrote.
“This is heartbreaking,” another added.

King admitted the comments were difficult to read, especially because being a good mother “means so much” to her.

“It’s okay to not agree and ask questions,” she said. “But personally attacking someone and name-calling will never be okay.”

No Regrets

Still, despite the controversy, King says she stands by her decision. “They are well traveled, very loved, and very lucky children,” she said. “Them spending $4 and $7 on a meal really isn’t a big deal for them.”

More importantly, she says her kids walked away understanding that money comes back, but choices matter.

And for King, that lesson was worth weathering the internet storm.
