The hosts eventually put him in a tough spot: choosing between Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, two of the greatest players he had coached, both of whom won titles under his guidance.
An Anecdote from the 1999-00 Season
During the session, after easily making a few choices, Jackson faced the ultimate dilemma. He shared an interesting anecdote from the 1999-00 season when he was coaching the Los Angeles Lakers. Jordan, having retired a year earlier, attended one of the Lakers’ games. Jackson asked Jordan to give Kobe some advice after the game.
Jackson recalled asking Jordan to speak to Kobe about his tendency to take over games prematurely. He took Jordan into the chairman’s room and waited for Kobe. When Kobe walked in, he looked at Jordan and boldly said, “I could kick your ass.” To everyone’s surprise, Jordan replied, “You might.” Jordan told Kobe that he had been watching his games and believed that Kobe might indeed beat him in a 1v1.
