Meet the Mangiones! What to know about CEO Shooter Luigi Mangione’s Family

Luigi Mangione, the primary suspect in the Dec. 4 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, grew up in an affluent Maryland family.

Raised in Baltimore County, Mangione attended the prestigious Gilman School, graduating as valedictorian in 2016. In his graduation speech, he acknowledged the significant sacrifices parents made to send their children to the institution.

Mangione later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, but his life took a troubling turn in recent years. Following a back surgery in 2023, he reportedly became reclusive, cutting off communication with friends and family. His mother, Kathleen Mangione, reported him missing on Nov. 18, citing concerning behavior.

On Dec. 9, five days after Thompsonโ€™s shooting outside a Manhattan hotel, Mangione was apprehended at a McDonaldโ€™s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and charged with murder.

Who are the Mangiones

Mangioneโ€™s family has deep roots in Marylandโ€™s history. His late grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., was a self-made multimillionaire real estate developer who purchased the Turf Valley Country Club in the 1970s and later expanded the familyโ€™s holdings to include Hayfields Country Club.

The family also owned the conservative-leaning radio station WCBM and established Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company where Mangione volunteered during high school.

His father, Louis Mangione, manages the family business ventures through Mangione Family Enterprises. His two sisters, MariaSanta and Luciana, have pursued successful careers as a physician and visual artist, respectively.

Family wealth came with its own challenges. Mangioneโ€™s grandmother, Mary, who passed away in 2023, left behind a sizable inheritance exceeding $30 million. However, her will stipulated that any grandchild charged with a felony would forfeit their share, a detail now central to Mangioneโ€™s unfolding legal troubles.

He has two sisters

Mangione has two sisters, MariaSanta and Luciana, each excelling in their own fields. MariaSanta is a physician affiliated with the University of Texas Southwestern, as highlighted in her Vanderbilt School of Medicine profile. Luciana, on the other hand, is a talented visual artist, as noted by Voyage Baltimore.

When reflecting on what she values most, Luciana emphasized the importance of family. โ€œIn my experience, the greatest moments of joy in life have come from the time spent with those I love,โ€ she shared.

According to USA Today, Luciana once shared an Instagram photo with her brother on the day of his detention, accompanied by the heartfelt caption, โ€œPraying for you.โ€ The post has since been deleted.

His relatives own several country clubs in the Baltimore area

According to The New York Times, Mangioneโ€™s grandparents made a significant investment in the 1970s when they purchased the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland, and developed the surrounding golf course community.

In the 1980s, the family expanded their portfolio by acquiring the Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

Mangioneโ€™s father, Louis, played a pivotal role in the family business landscape. He became an owner of Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company where Mangione volunteered during high school, as reported by The Baltimore Banner. Louis also serves as the lead for Mangione Family Enterprises, per the outlet.

The Family remains in shock

The family has expressed shock and devastation at the allegations. Mangioneโ€™s cousin, Maryland state delegate Nino Mangione, issued a statement on social media extending condolences to Brian Thompsonโ€™s family and urging prayers for all those involved.

Mangioneโ€™s arrest has cast a spotlight on a family marked by privilege, success, and, now, public scrutiny.
