Mazzarri: ‘I apologize to the fans, they don’t deserve this. This is an unacceptable defeat’

The Napoli coach after the elimination from the Italian Cup against Frosinone: ‘I don’t like the way we ended the game. Leaving the key players on the bench sent a negative signal.’

“I hope it’s a lesson for the future; starting tomorrow, we need to face ourselves and change our approach,” said Walter Mazzarri after Napoli’s heavy elimination from the Italian Cup with a 4-0 defeat at home to Frosinone. “Firstly, I want to apologize to the fans who supported us until the end. I feel sorry for them; they don’t deserve this. I don’t like the way we ended the game. Tomorrow we will gather and reflect on this together. It’s not good to finish a game like that.”

“We didn’t take this game seriouslu, and went into it recklessly. It’s okay to lose, but not 4-0; we looked like a team made of individuals, everyone was playing for themselves. Probably the players who usually are in the strating eleven are not accustomed to coming in from the bench. They played worse than our bench players.”

“We’ve had many games, important ones, but I wanted some rest for them… I don’t know if leaving them on the bench sent a negative signal. But managing all competitions is not easy. Ironically, we performed better when the less regular players were on; we could have even taken the lead. I was confident we could win it in the end with the substitutions. Perhaps we thought we had already won and underestimated the danger. Losing at home without even putting up a fight is not acceptable.”
