The 1990 Ballon d’Or winner with Inter, Lothat Matthaus: “It is an undeserved title for Messi. The Norwegian did better all year long.”
Unfair Voting. Lothar Matthäus, the former Inter player and the 1990 Ballon d’Or winner, has been quite critical towards the Argentinian, expressing his displeasure over the decision to award the Ballon d’Or to Lionel Messi.
According to the German football legend, Messi should not have received the recognition for the 8th time. In fact, there was a player who had never been honored before who deserved to win it according to the German: Haaland.
The Norwegian striker concluded the last season with more goals than matches in both the Champions League and the Premier League. He won the league, FA Cup, and the Champions League. But it wasn’t enough.
Matthäus comments
“Throughout the year, Haaland had outperformed Messi,” Matthäus commented on Sky Deutschland. “The trophy is completely undeserved. This demonstrates that the World Cup matters more than anything.”
“For me, no one has done better than Haaland this year; he has been the best in the past 12 months. He won significant titles with City, setting all the goal records. The voting is a farce, even though I have always been a Messi fan.”
