It was a night to forget for Romelu Lukaku. Eager to redeem himself after a lackluster performance in the first leg against Inter, the former Chelsea and United striker fared even worse yesterday, being the negative protagonist of several clumsy plays. Now goalless for the third consecutive Serie A match, Lukaku was even targeted by the official X account of his former team, Inter, as well as numerous social media users.
Inter fans haven’t forgiven Lukaku for the saga surrounding his departure at the end of last season, right after losing the Champions League final with Manchester City. Negotiations for his comeback from Chelsea were ongoing while Lukaku started ‘flirting’ with Juventus. However, his move to Turin was linked to the departure of Vlahovic, leaving Roma as his only alternative after the rift with Inter and Juventus’ abandonment.

The match didn’t start well for Lukaku, as an unfortunate deflection turned into an assist for Acerbi’s opening goal after just 17 minutes. A defensive blunder by Dimarco later in the game provided another opportunity for Roma, but Lukaku squandered it by failing to score against Sommer.
