Theย Lakersย believe they are about to hire a generational coach, he is the next Pat Riley?
Former NBA star J.J. Redick has been cautioned against taking the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching position. Despite these warnings, Redick remains undeterred as he continues negotiations to lead one of North America’s most successful franchises.
Reports consistently link Redick to the Lakers, who are seeking a new head coach after parting ways with Darvin Ham. The NBA world is also watching LeBron James’ next move, as he is expected to decline his player option and explore free agency this summer. Regardless of LeBron’s decision, the Lakers are keen to assess Redickโs potential, with growing expectations that he could become the franchise’s 29th head coach.
The Lakers’ Interest in Redick
NBA insiders Jovan Buha and Shams Charania reveal that the Lakers favorably compare Redick to their legendary former coach and executive Pat Riley, one of the most decorated figures in NBA history.
Riley coached the “Showtime” Lakers to four championships in seven NBA Finals appearances from 1981 to 1990. Later, he joined the Miami Heat, leading them to their first championship in 2006, and assembled the Heat’s “Big Three” of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade, resulting in two more championships in 2012 and 2013.
Redick, who made an NBA Finals appearance with the Orlando Magic in 2009, retired after a 15-year career without a championship. However, his reputation as a sharpshooter and extensive league connections could help him secure the coveted coaching role.
As the Lakers continue their search, Redickโs potential appointment is becoming increasingly likely, signaling a new chapter for both him and the iconic franchise.
If not Reddick, then James Borego?
If the Lakers decide not to hire Redick, they have other candidates in mind to replace Ham. The franchise has reportedly met with Boston Celtics top assistant Sam Cassell and New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego, who coached the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022. With LeBron James’ future uncertain, the Lakers are under pressure to make the right choice — and Redick is gaining more and more momentum as their potential head coach.
