The movie “Titanic” was a career-defining moment for Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, but the British actress has revealed that the experience wasn’t always smooth sailing. Specifically, Winslet found their kissing scenes to be quite bothersome, and it had nothing to do with DiCaprio himself.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Winslet shared that the kissing scenes were challenging because of her makeup. “We kept having to redo the kiss because I had so much pale makeup on,” she explained. “After every take, we had to check our makeup. DiCaprio would end up with patches of my pale makeup on his face, making him look like there were parts missing.”
One of the film’s most iconic moments is the “I’m flying” scene where DiCaprio’s character, Jack, holds Winslet’s character, Rose, at the bow of the ship. Despite its breathtaking final result, Winslet described filming it as a “nightmare.”
“Leo couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to reshoot it about four times because James Cameron wanted the lighting to be perfect,” Winslet recalled. “I had makeup and brushes hidden in my blouse, and between takes, I was redoing both our makeup.”
The discomfort extended beyond makeup issues; Winslet’s wardrobe was also problematic. “When I look at that scene, all I can think about is how I couldn’t breathe in that bloody corset,” she said while rewatching the iconic moment.
Reflecting on her relationship with director James Cameron, Winslet noted that working with him was intense. In a 1998 interview with Rolling Stone, she famously remarked that she would only work with Cameron again “for a lot of money,” highlighting the demanding nature of the production.
Despite the challenges, Winslet’s and DiCaprio’s performances in “Titanic” helped solidify their status as top-tier actors, demonstrating their dedication and resilience throughout the grueling filming process.
