Lakers’ new leader addresses the elephant in the room and keeps it real when it comes to Dan Hurley
The Los Angeles Lakers welcomed JJ Redick as their new head coach during a press conference on his 40th birthday, Monday. This development followed a highly publicized pursuit of Dan Hurley, the current University of Connecticut coach.
Despite a tempting offer from the Lakers, Hurley chose to stay with the Huskies. Redick, who has not previously coached, stepped into the role amid many comparisons to Hurley.
Redick addressed these comparisons directly at the press conference with his typical wit and assurance. “My ego is intact, and my feelings are just fine,” Redick remarked, smiling. “Dan Hurley has secured two national titles at UConn. Meanwhile, I’ve been a two-time champion in the Swiss leagueโs 3rd and 4th grade divisionโclearly, we’re playing in different leagues here.”
“I may not have direct coaching experience in the NBA, but my background is rich with relevant experience,” Redick noted. His journey began at Duke University, where he played under the legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski for four years, followed by a 15-year tenure as an NBA player. This experience has deeply influenced his understanding of basketball.
Redick’s Path to Coaching
Beyond the court, Redick has honed his skills in communication and analysis through his roles as a podcaster and an ESPN analyst. “The opportunity to engage with players on my podcast, coupled with my experience in sports commentary and game analysis, has provided a well-rounded preparation for this role,” he explained.
His ability to connect with players, coupled with his analytical approach and media savvy, offers a distinctive perspective that he brings to his coaching style, shaping his approach to leadership in the NBA.
