Jennifer Grey talks about the ‘Dirty Dancing’ co star: ‘I honestly regret only one thing’

Jennifer Grey Reflects on Patrick Swayze’s Legacy as ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel Nears

Jennifer Grey, renowned for her iconic role as “Baby” in the 1987 romantic drama “Dirty Dancing,” continues to honor the legacy of her late co-star, Patrick Swayze, as the film approaches its sequel release. “Dirty Dancing” remains a beloved classic, holding a special place in the hearts of fans and maintaining its status as a cult classic.

Since her rise to fame alongside Swayze, Grey has been an unwavering custodian of their shared cinematic contribution. Despite the passage of years, the prospect of a sequel has been met with mixed emotions, largely due to the indelible mark left by Swayze, who passed away in 2009 after battling pancreatic cancer.

In a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Grey discussed the complexities of returning to the cherished story without Swayze. “What happened happened, and that will never happen again. There will never be another Johnny. There will never be another Patrick,” she emphasized, underscoring the challenge of creating a sequel that respects the original while standing on its own.

Grey revealed during the interview that the upcoming film will not attempt to recast Swayze’s character, Johnny Castle, but will instead introduce audiences to a matured “Baby” and other familiar characters from the original film. This decision points to a thoughtful approach to the sequel, aiming to honor the original without overshadowing its memory.

Reflecting on her time filming “Dirty Dancing,” Grey has shared that while she and Swayze may not have had off-screen chemistry, their on-screen performances were undeniably compelling. This revelation was further explored in her autobiography, “Out of the Corner,” where she expressed a heartfelt apology to Swayze, wishing she had appreciated his true nature rather than hoping he would meet her expectations.

As the sequel to “Dirty Dancing” progresses, with Lionsgate announcing the project at a CinemaCon presentation in April 2022, Grey’s commitment to preserving Swayze’s memory and respecting the film’s legacy is clear.
