The Rossoneri need to go and secure the three points in Newcastle and hope that Dortmund beats PSG.
The race to the round of 16 for Milan has become complicated after the defeat at San Siro against Borussia Dortmund. However, Stefano Pioli’s team still has small hope for the knockout stage.
THE POSSIBLE SCENARIOS
It all starts with Milan’s beating Newcastle in England on December 13th: with any other result, the Rossoneri would finish 4th in the group and out of Europe (if they draw and remain tied on points with the English team, they go down on goal difference).
With a potential 3 points against Newcastle, Milan would rise to 8 points in the standings. At that point, the Rossoneri would need a big favor from Borussia Dortmund, already certain of qualification with 10 points, but not guaranteed the top spot in the group (in case of a win, PSG would advance as the group leader, having won both direct encounters).
If the Germans beat PSG (which has 7 points in the group), Milan, with the victory, would qualify to the next round. In the case of a draw in Germany Milan will have the same amount of points with PSG, but then Pioli’s team would be third and in the Europa League, penalized by goal difference in direct encounters.
However, be aware that a draw is not enough for PSG to qualify: if Newcastle beats Milan, there would be a tie on points at 8, with the English team having the advantage in direct encounters over Luis Enrique’s squad.”
