The Nerazzurri coach after the Supercoppa victory: “A win for the players, the club, and the fans”
Simone Inzaghi is enjoying his fifth Italian Supercup win as a coach (a record) and praises Napoli, defeated only in the 91st minute by a goal from Lautaro Martinez. “Firstly, congratulations to Napoli. They played a great game, fought like lions even with 10 men. Losing in the 90th minute is tough.“
“I must applaud my team; playing a final only 60 hours after the semifinal is unprecedented,” explained the Nerazzurri coach for ‘Sport Mediaset‘ microphones. “We paid a bit for it, but we had tremendous focus. We defended well, and we could have scored in the first half with Dimarco, and then in the second half, we had our chances. But we faced a team that knew what to do on the field.”
Regarding the trophy record: “I am satisfied for the players and their hard work. Also, for the club, which has never let us down in these three years, even with some difficulties. Then, it’s for the fans who undertook a long journey; after the goal, we went to the stands as a dedication to them.”
There’s a gentle rebuke for Barella, who will miss the Fiorentina game. “Tonight, Barella made a mistake, but he is the first to realize it. He’s a top player who needs to improve in certain aspects; he penalized us for this and the next game. He has improved compared to the last two years, but he still needs to get better. I also applaud the substitutes; they helped us and must continue to do so until the end.”
Apart from Istanbul, Inzaghi is flawless in finals. “There are few secrets. You need a great team, like I have at Inter and had at Lazio. It was something new; I was optimistic, but there was a final three days after a semifinal. I had some tired players, but the main credit goes to the guys.”
