Investigation into death of Brett Gardner’s son Miller ongoing as asphyxiation ruled out

Costa Rican authorities are still probing the tragic death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, with no clear cause yet determined.

While initial suspicions pointed to asphyxiation, officials have ruled that out based on current evidence. Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, spokesperson for Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ), confirmed that agents are diligently investigating the circumstances of the teenager’s passing.

No Clear Cause of Death Yet Identified

The Gardner family was vacationing in Costa Rica when the unexpected loss occurred. In a joint statement released Sunday through the Yankees, Brett and Jessica Gardner shared that their son died peacefully in his sleep on March 21, 2025, noting that several family members had fallen ill during the trip.

We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” they wrote. The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica acknowledged the death of a U.S. citizen on that date but withheld details at the family’s request for privacy.

OIJ reports indicate Miller was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Manuel Antonio, a coastal resort town in Puntarenas province. Alvarado Garcia noted no airway obstruction was present, though traces of vomit were found.

The family had eaten at a local restaurant before falling ill, but specifics about who was affected or the restaurant’s identity remain undisclosed. To explore possible health or environmental factors, Costa Rican health officials have ordered a detailed study, with autopsy and toxicology results expected in two to three months.

A Devastated Family and a Grieving Sports Community

In their emotional statement, the Gardners remembered Miller as a lively, cherished son and brother. “We cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,” they said, highlighting his passion for football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and loved ones.

He lived life to the fullest every single day.” The Yankees echoed this sentiment, expressing deep sorrow and stating the organization is “filled with grief” over the loss.

Miller, who wore number 11 like his dad, played high school football in South Carolina, known for his boundless energy and sports enthusiasm.

His father, Brett, a Yankees stalwart for 14 years, helped secure the 2009 World Series title and retired in 2021. As the investigation continues, the Gardner family’s tragedy resonates far beyond the field.
