‘Every man is the craftsman of his own fortune.’ It applies to us all, and certainly to Simone Inzaghi, who has transformed both himself and this team into something unseen in recent years. He has built this Inter inch by inch, and now, he is reaping the rewards. With trophies won, his status might only be elevated.
Just two months ago, Beppe Marotta spoke about his coach, saying: “He came to us with only one coaching experience, at Lazio. He’s young, and his best is yet to come.” It seems like Simone’s best is happening right now.
The discussion is not limited solely to the results, although they are excellent. It’s about the complete ownership of the Inter world. He is not the same coach who arrived in the summer of 2021. Or rather, he is in principles, certainly, but the application of these principles is now something his colleagues may envy.
INZAGHI CAN BECOME ONE OF INTER’S GREATEST COACHES
Adding some trophies, starting with this season’s Scudetto, Inzaghi can potentially bring the ‘Second Star’ and etch his name into the ‘Nerazzurri’ history forever, joining some of the best coaches in Inter’s history.
This is his best start; in the past three years with Inter, he had never collected 35 points so far. Conte, in his first year, garnered 37 points in 14 matches but did not win the league title. Above him are Mourinho in the year of the Treble, Mancini in 2006-07, and even Trapattoni in the record-breaking Scudetto of 1988/89.
In football, as in life, results make the difference in judgments. Inzaghi knows this firsthand, but it’s essential to widen the perspective a bit. Alongside Mazzarri, Simone is the only coach among the potential title contenders who has never won a Scudetto. It’s a disadvantage in terms of experience, but Inzaghi is proving he knows how to bridge that gap.
Another aspect of his growth is in the development of individuals. The list is long, but Inzaghi is improving his players constantly: Calhanoglu has transformed from an attacking midfielder/winger to one of the best defensive midfielders in the league. Then there are Dimarco, Dumfries, Thuram, and Lautaro, who is currently experiencing his best season ever. He has improved basically everyone
EXPERIENCE
Inzaghi has gained experience; that’s almost trivial to say. Compared to the past, he has a broader rotation management. The last two months of the previous season changed him, showed him the way. Now, the rotations involve everyone, and he trusts each available player, even the younger ones. In the past, he wouldn’t have played Asllani with the consistency he does now, for example.
“Inzaghi has reached a very valid level,” Marotta added last night at the AIC. One great skill recognized by his players is his ability to put everyone in the best possible conditions for an upcoming match. For some, he has even invented new positions for his players: Calhanoglu has been discussed, Carlos Augusto the wing-back played as a centre-back in the game against Napoli is the latest example.
Inter is now a balanced machine, with the second-best goal difference in Europe after Bayern: it means they have found a way to pay attention to detail both defensively and offensively. Inzaghi is showing excellent squad management, exceeding expectations while playing a great and attracting football at the same time.
