Inside Savannah Guthrie’s decade-long marriage to her husband and their very unexpected proposal day

Savannah Guthrie may be best known for waking up America on the Today show, but behind the early alarms and breaking news is a love story that’s lasted over a decade.

Her husband, Michael Feldman, has been by her side since since they began dating in 2009, through career highs, growing pains, two kids, and one hilariously awkward proposal day.

So, who is the man who stole the anchor’s heart and fixed her toilet while doing it? Here’s a closer look at Michael Feldman, Savannah Guthrie’s husband of 11 years.

From birthday parties to book releases: a long love story

Savannah met Michael in October 2008 at his 40th birthday party with a mutual friend, shortly after her split from her first husband. She’d later write that Feldman was the “political consultant who made me laugh.” They began dating the next year and stayed together through job changes, parenting hopes, and cross-country moves.

By the time they got engaged in 2013, they had been together for over five years. They married in March 2014 in an intimate wedding with fewer than 100 guests and surprised everyone at the reception with another piece of news: Savannah was pregnant.

Their daughter, Vale, arrived in August 2014. Their son, Charley, followed in December 2016. Savannah has been open about becoming a mom later in life, she was 43 when Vale was born, and said the couple once feared it might not happen.

“We thought maybe it was too late and we’d lost our chance,” she told PEOPLE. “When we found out we were pregnant, I don’t think there were two happier people on this planet.”

These days, the family of four keeps busy, but always makes time for the small things. Whether cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles (Feldman’s favorite team), celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas as an interfaith family, or spending summer nights at the US Open, their bond is built on shared values, and a lot of laughter.

“Daddy can fix it” has even become a family catchphrase and Savannah swears it’s true.

“Let’s say goodbye” — and then, a ring: the day Savannah broke up with her husband

One of Savannah Guthrie’s most viral stories isn’t about the Today show. It’s about the day she accidentally broke up with her boyfriend… hours before he proposed.

Savannah first shared the story on Today in 2019 and revisited it years later on The Kelly Clarkson Show in February 2025, retelling the unforgettable moment from 2013. At the time, she and Michael had been dating for more than five and a half years, and everyone, including her mom, was losing patience.

During a vacation in Turks and Caicos, Savannah made a decision. “We love each other, but this has been going on too long,” she told him. “Let’s just say goodbye.”

What she didn’t know was that Michael had an engagement ring in his pocket. He’d already planned to propose that night.

Savannah spent the day emotional and unsure of what came next, until Michael suggested they toast with some champagne on their balcony. Then, out came the ring.

“It was so shocking to me, and I was so happy,” she said. Her answer? “Yes — in .2 seconds.”

The story has since become a favorite for fans, and for Savannah, a reminder that sometimes, the best endings come after a dramatic plot twist.

A marriage built on faith, support — and matching tattoos

Behind the scenes, Savannah and Michael make it work, even with her 3 a.m. wake-ups. She’s called him “chief technology officer and chief grilling officer,” especially during the COVID years when parenting duties blurred with Zoom calls and news deadlines.

Feldman’s not just a behind-the-scenes partner, he’s a former senior adviser and traveling chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore during the Clinton-Gore administration, and later co-founded the communications firm FGS Global. In 2014, he even wrote a heartfelt public letter to baby Vale, calling fatherhood the “most important job” of his life.

In February 2025, Savannah wrapped her book tour for Mostly What God Does Is Love You with a quiet nod to her family: a small tattoo of two hearts on her forearm, drawn by none other than Vale and Charley.

Love, in this house, is personal, and permanent.
