“I had no idea.”
TV host and NFL legend Michael Strahan was left stunned after discovering a long-hidden childhood secret. And it all unfolded live on air.
The Good Morning America anchor, 52, thought he knew everything about his upbringing with his parents, Gene and Louise, and five siblings. But during a sit-down interview arranged by his former GMA co-host Sara Haines, a shocking revelation came to light: the fate of the family’s childhood pet pig.
According to Haines, she had visited Strahan’s parents before his father’s passing in 2020 to record a heartfelt segment. During the shoot, his parents casually shared that the beloved family pig, a pet from Michael’s youth, was actually served as a family meal.
“They shared with me that they ate the pig,” Haines said during The Weekend View.
Thinking Strahan already knew, Haines later joked about it on set, only to be met with confusion.
“He’s like, ‘What are you talking about?’ He didn’t know,” she recalled. “And he called his mom immediately. I was like, ‘I didn’t mean to betray the family trust! I thought you told him!’”
The heartbreaking (and slightly bizarre) news hit Strahan hard. As the youngest of six, he had been shielded from the truth for decades. It was a secret quietly kept until now.
A Touching Tribute to His Late Father
Strahan’s father, Gene Willie Strahan Sr., passed away in 2020. At the time, GMA honored him with a touching on-air tribute.
“To Michael, Louise, and the entire Strahan family, we want you to know our hearts are with you today,” said then-cohost Amy Robach. “We love you, Michael.”
Despite the emotional blow, Strahan continues to celebrate his close-knit family. Just this January, he honored his mom Louise on her 82nd birthday with a sweet Instagram message:
“Happy birthday to my favorite person. I’m lucky to have you as my mom and love you endlessly. Your baby boy, Michael.”
A Proud Girl Dad
Beyond his television and NFL careers, Strahan is a devoted father of four. He shares Tanita, 33, and Michael Jr., 31, with ex-wife Wanda Hutchins, and 20-year-old twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia, with second ex-wife Jean Muggli.
While fans may know him as the ever-composed face of Fox NFL Sunday and GMA, moments like these remind us: Michael Strahan is also a son, a father. And now, a former pig owner with a truly unforgettable story.
