Hero Pup “Duke” fights off five bloodthirsty Coyotes in 45-minute backyard brawl

In a scene straight out of an action movie, a one-year-old stray pup in Southern California took on an entire pack of wild coyotes, and won.

Now affectionately named Duke, the floppy-eared Labrador Retriever-German Shepherd mix has earned hero status. He bravely defended a suburban street from five aggressive coyotes in the early morning hours in Brea, California.

Security Footage Captures the Unbelievable Standoff

Caught on home security footage, the epic 45-minute clash shows Duke surrounded by the snarling pack as they take turns biting at his heels, face, and sides. But the brave pup doesn’t back down.

Instead, Duke fights back, growling, barking, and spinning with raw instinct as he protects himself from all sides. At one point, he strategically backs into a bush to prevent being flanked. His instincts are spot on.

“They couldn’t get a good hit in,” said homeowner Melissa Shatynski, who, along with her husband Steve, reviewed the security footage the next morning. “He knew how to protect himself and fight them off… It was unbelievable.”

From Stray to Street Guardian

When Shatynski and her household woke up and saw the situation unfolding on camera, they quickly stepped in, scaring the coyotes off. But Duke didn’t stick around. The next day, he was spotted roaming the neighborhood, alone but undefeated.

Worried for his safety, Shatynski contacted Orange County Animal Care, who brought Duke to a local shelter. And after word spread about his heroic showdown, it didn’t take long for adoption interest to pour in.

As of Thursday morning, Duke was up for adoption, though it appears he may have already found a new home.

Duke’s Softer Side Emerges

Described by shelter staff as a “shy but friendly boy,” Duke loves other dogs, splashing in the pool, and doing zoomies once he warms up to new people. In a video posted by Orange County Animal Care, the once-battle-worn pup is seen happily playing in the water and wrestling with a new canine friend, worlds away from his life-or-death encounter just days earlier.

Coyotes Growing More Aggressive, Experts Warn

Wildlife experts say the coyote breeding season may explain the bold behavior seen in the attack. During this time, adult coyotes often become more territorial and food-driven while providing for their pups, sometimes targeting small pets or dogs.

But this time, they picked the wrong pup.

Duke may have started as a stray, but after facing down five hungry coyotes and walking away without serious injury, he’s now got something far more valuable than a collar, a reputation as a four-legged legend.
