As former President Jimmy Carter nears his 100th birthday, he has made his final wish known from his hospice care in Georgia. The 99-year-old, though increasingly frail, remains remarkably engaged in today’s political landscape.
Jason Carter, Jimmy’s grandson, shared with the Atlanta-Journal Constitution that his grandfather’s heartfelt desire is to cast his vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming November elections. Alongside his interest in the election, Jimmy is also deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Gaza and other global issues.
The U.S. presidential election is set to take place just a few weeks after Jimmy’s 100th birthday. Early voting in Georgia begins on October 15, and Jimmy is hopeful he will live to participate. He has been in hospice care for more than a year, following the death of his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away at 96 after battling dementia.
The last time Jimmy Carter was seen in public was at Rosalynn’s funeral in Plains, Georgia. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, as well as Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, Laura Bush, and the Clintons.
Jimmy Carter’s life has been marked by significant health challenges. In 2015, he was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma that had spread to his brain, successfully treated with radiation therapy. In 2019, he experienced several falls, resulting in stitches and surgery.
Despite these setbacks, Jimmy remained optimistic and active in public service for as long as possible. In 2023, he chose to enter hospice care after numerous hospital visits, withdrawing from public life to spend his final days surrounded by close family and friends.
