Forget about JJ Reddick, the Lakers won’t listen to Lebron. This is expected to be the new coach now

Hurley, winner of back-to-back nationals titles, has emerged as one of the best coaches in college basketball and is now about to take over from Darwin Ham

The Los Angeles Lakers are focusing on UConn’s Dan Hurley as their next head coach. They have already made initial contact with Hurley, and discussions are expected to intensify in the coming days. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers are “relentless” in their efforts to secure Hurley, who has been their top choice since the search began.

The Lakers are reportedly ready to offer Hurley a substantial, long-term contract to transition from the Huskies to the NBA. Despite interviewing other candidates, Hurley remains the primary focus for general manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss.

Hurley, who has led Connecticut to back-to-back national championships, is known for his tactical skills and talent development. The Lakers believe he can maximize their young core and develop future talent, which is crucial for success in the NBA’s new second-apron era. This era imposes restrictions on roster-building for high-spending teams, making player development essential.

Hurley has shown interest in coaching in the NBA and has communicated to the Lakers his desire to “explore the full picture of a partnership with one of basketball’s winningest franchises.”

Previously, reports indicated that J.J. Redick was likely to be offered the position after the Finals, where he is working as a broadcaster. Another candidate under strong consideration has been James Borrego.

Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract extension with UConn in June 2023, which runs through the 2028-29 season. Despite this, the Lakers remain determined to bring him on board.
