Florida mother accused of killing two children found dead inside $1.7M mansion as investigators reveal disturbing details
Authorities in Florida are investigating a devastating case after a mother and her two children were discovered dead inside their home in an upscale gated community.
Officials say the deaths appear to be the result of a murder-suicide involving 44-year-old Monika Rubacha and her two children, Josh James, 14, and Emma James, 11, whose bodies were found inside the family’s residence in Lakewood Ranch.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the property around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a welfare check request from the children’s father, Richard James, who had been unable to reach his family while traveling in South America.
When deputies entered the home, they discovered the three victims inside the residence, each suffering from what authorities described as “traumatic injuries.”
Autopsy results are still pending, and investigators have not publicly confirmed the exact cause of death.
Authorities describe violent scene inside the home
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, evidence at the scene indicated that the mother killed both children in separate rooms before taking her own life.
Officials emphasized that no other person is believed to have been involved.
Randy Warren, Public Information Officer for the sheriff’s office, told WFLA that deputies quickly realized the severity of the situation once they entered the residence.
“It was pretty obvious that there were dead people inside,” Warren said.
He also described the situation as deeply disturbing for those who responded.

“This is a violent scene,” Warren said, adding that “it’s horrible to even imagine what would have been going through the mind of this mother that led up to this.”
Investigators further indicated that evidence suggested the act had been planned, noting that the mother appeared to know what she was doing before the tragedy unfolded.
Father learned of tragedy after returning from South America
The children’s father had been traveling for business in South America when he became concerned after losing contact with his family.
After he requested the welfare check, deputies were sent to the property, ultimately discovering the deaths.

Authorities said the father flew back to Florida and was informed of the tragedy shortly after arriving.
“This is a horrible thing for the deputies to have to witness,” officials said, noting that the situation was even more devastating for the children’s father and husband who had been away at the time.
“It’s an incredible emotional day for him. It’s not a good scene at all,” officials said.
Family had recently moved to Florida
Investigators said the family had relocated from Missouri to the Lakewood Ranch area roughly three years ago.
Authorities also noted that there had been no prior police calls to the residence before the incident, and the case remains under active investigation.
Before the tragedy, Rubacha’s social media presence portrayed a close-knit household. One friend previously described them as “a picture perfect family” in a comment under a family photograph posted on Facebook in 2018.

The home where the deaths occurred is located in The Lake Club, an exclusive gated community within Lakewood Ranch known for multimillion-dollar properties.
Among the high-profile residents associated with the area was singer Mick Jagger, who owned a mansion in the community after purchasing it in 2020 before selling the property in 2023 for $3.25 million.
Officials said the Lake Club community had no additional information to provide as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
