Family First: VP J.D. Vance and wife Usha Vance bring stability to the kids in a very abnormal situation’

From Appalachian roots to the Naval Observatory โ€” JD Vanceโ€™s second act comes with Secret Service playmates, toddler military briefings, and one determined Second Lady.

They may live in one of the most secure residences in America, but inside the gates of the Vice Presidentโ€™s home, itโ€™s still snack time, sibling squabbles, and bedtime stories.

Vice President JD Vance sat down with Fox News Digital this week to talk about the real adjustment behind his new title โ€” not in the Situation Room, but in the living room.

โ€œWeโ€™re trying to deliver as much normalcy to the kids in a very abnormal situation,โ€ he said.

And letโ€™s just say: mission (mostly) accomplished.

โ€œHe has a bunch of Secret Service agents to play withโ€ฆโ€

Vanceโ€™s three kids โ€” Ewan (7), Vivek (5), and Mirabel (3) โ€” are taking their new reality in wildly different strides.

โ€œEwan is adjusting, but heโ€™s also aware of all of it,โ€ the VP explained.
โ€œVivekโ€ฆ he thinks itโ€™s just fun. He has a bunch of Secret Service agents to play with, and he gets to go wherever he wants to. He really likes that.โ€
โ€œAnd Mirabel? She has no idea whatโ€™s going on.โ€

But Mirabel may be stealing hearts already. The Vancesโ€™ favorite family photo from their first 100 days in office? Their daughter in pajamas, โ€˜reviewingโ€™ a photo of an Indian troop formation.

โ€œItโ€™s so funny,โ€ JD Vance said with a laugh. โ€œIt might be my favorite picture of all.โ€

From Middletown to the Mansion

Just a few years ago, JD Vance wasnโ€™t navigating D.C. protocol โ€” he was a bestselling author from working-class Ohio, known for Hillbilly Elegy, his raw memoir about growing up in poverty and chasing opportunity through Yale Law School.

Now? Heโ€™s raising kids on the grounds of the Naval Observatory, Americaโ€™s vice presidential residence.

โ€œItโ€™s very isolated, which is nice,โ€ he said. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t feel like growing up in a fishbowl. There arenโ€™t cameras everywhere. Itโ€™s privateโ€”very normal for the kidsโ€”which is all we could ask for.โ€

The family still maintains their home in Cincinnati, but for now, Washington is home base โ€” with โ€œa good school situationโ€ and even playdates at the White House.

Meet Second Lady Usha Vance

Usha Vance may not have a rulebook, but sheโ€™s quickly becoming a force of her own. According to JD, sheโ€™s leaning into both motherhood and mission.

โ€œThereโ€™s not a manual that says, โ€˜this is how you will be Second Lady,โ€™โ€ he said.
โ€œSheโ€™s focused on issues she cares aboutโ€ฆ sheโ€™s very involved in the Kennedy Center and really likes the arts.โ€

With three young kids and a growing public role, Usha is proving you can absolutely do both.

โ€œShe saw this as an opportunity to deliver normalcy to the kids. Sheโ€™s doing well, and she really likes it. Sheโ€™s amazing.โ€

From bedtime photos that could go viral to Secret Service hide-and-seek, life in the Vance household might be unusualโ€”but itโ€™s also refreshingly real.

And as one toddler reviews military formations in her pajamas, Americaโ€™s Second Family reminds us: no matter how powerful the address, family still comes first.
