Ex Milan Director: “Calhanoglu would have stayed. It was Milan that didn’t want to keep him”

The former AC Milan executive: “Today they think he betrayed them, and the club, but it’s not true.”

Milan should have fought to keep Calhanoglu, not let him leave for free as it happened with Donnarumma and Kessie. Milan fans loved him. Today, they think he betrayed the Rossoneri world, but that is not true, that’s not the case at all. Milan didn’t want to keep Calhanoglu; it wasn’t Calhanoglu who wanted to leave Milan.” Former AC Milan executive Massimiliano Mirabelli who together with Marco Fassone brought the Turkish international from Leverkusen in the summer of the 2017, reveals a behind-the-scenes story about the Turkish midfielder, a key player for Inter under Simone Inzaghi.

Why didn’t I sign him for Inter before he went to Milan? (Mirabelli was Inter director before moving to Milan): “It took some courage to sign Calhanoglu after he had been out for eight months,” Mirabelli told Tuttosport. “I was certain of what I had seen, and that’s why I was happy to bring him to Milan. Ausilio [Inter’s sporting director] knew him well, anyway. And then he was smart to get him for free. He could have been signed, that’s true. In fact, we monitored him for a couple of years. But you know, there are market dynamics that lead you to choose this or that player.”
