Eerie family video of Tyler Robinson resurfaces after his arrest for Charlie Kirk’s assassination

The story of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has taken a chilling turn with the release of an old family video. In it, he is seen celebrating a prestigious presidential scholarship, a moment that now feels haunting in light of his arrest.

A Promising Start

In 2021, Robinson was awarded Utah State University’s resident presidential scholarship, a top-tier honor valued at $32,000. The scholarship, offered only to students with near-perfect grades and test scores, covers full tuition for four years.

In a video posted by his proud mother, Robinson, dressed in a maroon T-shirt, read aloud from the acceptance letter: “Congratulations, you have been selected to receive the resident presidential scholarship from Utah State University.” His mom could be heard cheering as the teen smiled.

But Robinson’s bright academic path dimmed quickly. He attended the university for just one semester before dropping out. Relatives later told investigators he had become “more political” in recent years, and that he had even mentioned disliking Kirk during a family dinner.

His mother once celebrated her ‘genius’ son online.

A Violent Turn

On Wednesday, Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck while hosting a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Chaos erupted as hundreds of students ran for cover. Kirk was rushed to the hospital but died soon after.

By Thursday night, Robinson was under arrest. His father, Matt, a longtime sheriff’s deputy, reportedly recognized him in FBI-released photos and convinced him to surrender after a tense confrontation.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed investigators recovered a hunting rifle and four engraved bullet casings. Among the disturbing messages were “Bella Ciao”, “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “If you read this you are gay lmao.” Cox called the crime a “political assassination” and a “watershed moment in American history.”

A Grandmother’s Denial

Robinson’s grandmother, Debbie, said she could not reconcile the shy boy she knew with the alleged assassin described by police. “He’s a wonderful child. There is no way that he could have done anything like this… He’s just a very shy, good kid,” she told reporters.

Once a scholarship student, now facing capital murder charges.

She insisted Robinson never hunted and had never shown interest in firearms. But social media posts appear to show him posing with large weapons, including an M2 Browning machine gun at a show.

Trump Reacts

President Donald Trump confirmed Robinson’s arrest during a Fox & Friends interview Friday morning and vented his fury at political violence. “We have radical left lunatics out there and we just have to beat the hell out of them,” he said.

After speaking with Kirk’s widow, Erika, Trump said she was “absolutely devastated.” Kirk leaves behind two young children: a daughter, 3, and a son, 16 months.

From a scholarship celebration in his family’s living room to a jail cell facing the death penalty, Tyler Robinson’s story has become a grim symbol of promise turned to violence and a nation divided over what it means.
