Former Indiana Pacers player Eddie Johnson has countless stories from his time on the court, but one tale involving the legendary Michael Jordan stands out above the rest. It was during the 1995/96 season when the Chicago Bulls were on their historic run to break the all-time record by winning 72 games.
The scene was an afternoon game that, on paper, meant nothing. Both the Bulls and the Pacers had already secured their spots in the playoffs, making the outcome seemingly not important. With about a minute and a half left in the game, the Pacers were comfortably ahead by eight points. Eddie Johnson found himself standing at the free-throw line, with the game seemingly in the bag.
He glanced back and saw Michael Jordan, who was still on the court despite the score. In a moment of casual bravado, Johnson called out to him, “Man, WHY DON’T YOU JUST GO AND SIT DOWN… The game is over!
