Following the release of her BBC radio series celebrating inspiring women in music, Love didn’t hold back in sharing her thoughts on artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Beyoncé.
In an interview with the U.K.’s Evening Standard, Love expressed her views on the state of female musicianship today. She acknowledged the success of many women in music but criticized what she perceives as a trend towards homogeneity, saying, “It’s great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché. Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same.”
Love’s commentary didn’t spare even the most popular artists. She mentioned Beyoncé’s venture into country music as a concept she appreciates for breaking traditional boundaries but admitted, “I just don’t like her music.” She was equally blunt about Taylor Swift, stating, “Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.“
Regarding Lana Del Rey, whom Love had previously praised as a musical genius, she remarked, “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off.“
These comments mark a shift from Love’s previous public statements, such as a 2021 birthday post where she described Swift as an “aspirational huge role model for many young women.” Despite her evolving opinions, Love’s commitment to showcasing influential women in music continues with her radio series “Courtney Love’s Women,” available for streaming on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds.
