Colin Cowherd explains the reason why Jordan has the edge over LeBron, claiming he will never surpass MJ

LeBron James may be entering Year 23, but according to Colin Cowherd, one thing hasn’t changed. “He’s still chasing the ghost.”

Only now? Even LeBron knows he can’t catch it.

The Ghost in Chicago

Back in 2016, after winning his third title, LeBron made headlines with a now-iconic quote:

“My motivation is this ghost I’m chasing… The ghost played in Chicago.”

That ghost, of course, is Michael Jordan. He’s a six-time champion, Bulls icon, global brand, and, in many eyes, the undisputed GOAT.

LeBron has since added a fourth ring and become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. But Cowherd thinks the chase is over.

“He knows in the basketball community, with basketball fans, he’s never going to catch MJ,” Cowherd said this week on The Herd. “MJ is six-for-six. MJ is more memorable. He’s got the brand. The logo. He sells more shoes. He makes you feel something.”

One Moment vs. A Dozen

Cowherd pointed to a key difference between the two legends: iconic memories.

“With Michael, there are a dozen plays you close your eyes and remember. With LeBron? There’s one, that chase-down block in 2016. That’s it.”

And it’s not just on the court. Cowherd noted that Jordan’s net worth now sits at $3.5 billion, compared to LeBron’s $1 billion, despite James being one of the highest-paid athletes in history.

“That’s why he wants to own a team,” Cowherd claimed. “He’s still chasing Michael.”

Opportunist or Loyalist?

Another key factor? Loyalty.

“LeBron’s bounced around to the best basketball opportunity every chance he’s had,” Cowherd said, citing Miami, Cleveland, and now Los Angeles.

In contrast, Jordan’s bond with the Bulls — one team, one dynasty — helped build the mystique that still surrounds him.

Cowherd admitted that LeBron’s 2016 title in Cleveland was unforgettable and the one time he truly made fans feel something. But since then, Cowherd argues, it’s been more strategy than storybook.

Final Word

LeBron’s career is historic. His numbers are staggering. And at 40, he’s still elite.

But to Colin Cowherd, and many fans, the GOAT debate isn’t about stats. It’s about emotion.
And on that front, Michael Jordan still lives rent-free.
