Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla shares some very bad news, immediately after winning the NBA finals

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla shared a bad injury update after the Celtics won Game 5 on Monday

The Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks to win the 2024 NBA Finals on Monday night. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla announced he would need knee surgery after tearing his meniscus in March. Mazzulla has been working through the injury since then, showing remarkable dedication.

“I tore my meniscus in March after we lost to Atlanta,” Mazzulla shared. “First thing I gotta do is get back on the mats. I’m going to be out for a little while.” Known for his mixed martial arts background, Mazzulla often motivated his team with UFC fights during their championship run.

This season also saw Timberwolves coach Chris Finch undergo knee surgery after a collision with Mike Conley. Finch’s surgery for a torn patellar tendon forced him to sit behind the bench during the series against the Nuggets.

Mazzulla’s surgery shouldn’t delay his return next season. Winning the championship at 35 made the wait worthwhile, making him the youngest coach to win an NBA title since Bill Russell. With Boston’s young core under contract for next season, they are strong contenders to repeat.

Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis, who returned from a lower leg injury during Game 5, will also need surgery and a few months of recovery.

Mazzulla’s Coaching Journey

Mazzulla started as an assistant under Ime Udoka in 2019, progressing from college and G League coaching. He became interim head coach in 2022 after Udoka’s suspension. When Udoka moved to coach the Rockets, Mazzulla was officially named head coach. He led the Celtics to the Eastern Conference finals in his first year and now, to their first championship since 2008.

Mazzulla’s resilience and commitment are evident as he prepares for surgery and recovery, ensuring a promising future for the Celtics.
