Firstly, he mentioned the peculiar early morning phone calls from the Avvocato Agnelli (The Juventus president durin 80′ 90′): “His calls at dawn were quite unique. I didn’t answer two of them, and he promptly asked me why I hadn’t picked up at 5:30 in the morning. It was a kind of challenge, and I always played along.”
He also talked about Cristiano Ronaldo, whom Gigi considers one of the most formidable opponents he’s ever faced: “After his bicycle goal in the Champions League semi-finals, Juventus fans stood up to applaud him with great sportsmanship. Seeing my incredulous expression, he approached me and said, ‘Not bad, huh, Gigi?’ and I burst out laughing.”
From Ronaldo to his expulsion in the next match with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu: “The expulsion didn’t hurt me, but the penalty awarded in injury time during an epic match did. Without a doubt, it was the most beautiful game I’ve participated in, one that could have gone down in history books. Even now, I haven’t understood why I was sent off, but it’s been a few days now (laughs).”
