Populous, the studio already responsible for the “Cathedral” project, has begun producing the first concepts for what will be Inter’s future home. The Nerazzurri club can exercise the option to purchase the area in the next six months.
A significant step forward has been taken regarding Inter’s new stadium. On October 5th, the Municipality of Rozzano approved an amendment to the Territorial Government Plan (PGT), which, for the first time, includes the possibility of constructing a sports facility in the area bordering Assago. The term “stadium,” which was previously missing, has now been included.
Populous, the studio already responsible for the “Cathedral” project and tasked with creating Inter’s new facility, has begun producing initial concepts for what will be Inter’s future home.
These are not yet the final renderings, which will come in the next steps of the process, but they provide an early glimpse of what might happen soon. As seen in the concept shown here, the idea is for an oval-shaped stadium with columns running around the sides and vertical curves towards the field, drawing inspiration from models like Tottenham Stadium, home to the Spurs, and the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where the Rams and Chargers play in the NFL.
In the future, the area, owned by the Cabassi family, offers Inter an option to buy the land, which they must exercise in the next six months. Zhang’s family will now await the publication of the approved amendment, and their next goal will be to acquire the already-optioned area.
Nevertheless, there has been an ongoing dialogue with the municipal administration of Rozzano and the neighboring Assago for months to identify the needs, particularly in terms of infrastructure, for a 70,000-seat stadium.
According to Populous’ vision, this will be a multifunctional and sustainable project, integrated into a green area open to the public and equipped with sports facilities, dining areas, shops, and services for fans, visitors, and the local community.
Inter, for its part, aims to present the project by April 2024, with the goal of obtaining approval within a year and a half, commencing construction, and being ready for the 2028/2029 season. That will mark Inter’s first season in their new home.
