A basic CCTV blunder proved pivotal in the arrest of Michael David McKee, the man now charged in the brutal murders of his ex-wife and her dentist husband, as shocked neighbors in Lincoln Park, Illinois, said they never imagined the vascular surgeon could be capable of such violence.
Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband, dentist Spencer Tepe, 37, were found shot dead inside their home in Weinland Park on December 30. Their two young children, both under the age of five, were discovered unharmed inside the house, which showed no signs of forced entry.
The case drew widespread attention after police released eerie surveillance footage showing a hooded figure walking through a snow-covered alley near the family’s home during the narrow window investigators believe the couple was killed, between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The CCTV Blunder That Cracked the Case
On Saturday, police confirmed they had arrested McKee, a 39-year-old vascular surgeon and Monique’s ex-husband, charging him with two counts of murder.
According to court documents, detectives traced the suspect through what they described as a basic but critical CCTV mistake. Investigators followed footage that led them “to a vehicle which arrived just prior to the homicides and left shortly after,” the documents state.

That vehicle was later located in Rockford, Illinois. Authorities say evidence showed McKee had possession of the vehicle both before and after the killings, ultimately tying him to the crime scene.
McKee is currently being held at the Winnebago County Jail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
A Relationship Long in the Past
Court records show McKee and Monique married on August 22, 2015, but separated just seven months later. Divorce proceedings began in May 2017 and were finalized the following month on the grounds of incompatibility.
Despite the years that had passed, the Tepe family says they were not surprised by McKee’s arrest.

In a statement, relatives said they had “suspected him from the beginning,” adding that the arrest represents an important step toward justice.
Neighbors React in Shock
Following McKee’s arrest, neighbors in Lincoln Park, Illinois, where he lived, spoke out in disbelief.
“He did not seem like somebody that would do something like this,” neighbor Gera-Lind Kolarik told ABC 7 Chicago. “I sat down with this man at the pool, barbecuing, talking about what a beautiful day it is, and then he turns out to be a killer. It’s kind of shocking.”
She added that the true victims are the children left behind.

“How do you explain to a child that mom and dad are here one day and gone the next?” she said.
Children Now in Family Care
Authorities say the alarm was first raised when Spencer failed to show up for work at Athens Dental Depot on the morning of December 30. After police conducted an initial wellness check and left when no one answered, friends returned about an hour later and entered the home, discovering the couple’s bodies.
The Tepe children are now being cared for by a brother-in-law as the family prepares funeral arrangements and focuses on protecting the children from further trauma.
At the time of their deaths, Monique and Spencer had just celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary.
In a final statement, the family said the couple remains “at the center of our hearts,” vowing to “surround and protect the two children they leave behind” while honoring “the light they brought into this world.”
As the case moves forward, investigators with the Columbus Police Department say they remain committed to ensuring accountability, in a case where a small detail on camera ultimately unraveled a devastating crime.
