Actor Denzel Washington becomes minister. Admits you ‘can’t talk’ about religion in Hollywood

The Oscar winner, and a huge movie legend Denzel Washington is a man with deep spiritual convictions. Now he becomes a licensed minister

Denzel Washington is embracing a new chapter in his lifeโ€”and itโ€™s not a role for the silver screen. The 69-year-old Hollywood icon, celebrated for his performances in Training Day and the upcoming Gladiator II, took a significant spiritual step on Saturday when he was baptized at Kelly Temple in New York City. During the ceremony, he also received his minister’s license.

Dressed in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, Denzel shared a heartfelt message with the congregation before his baptism. Reflecting on his faith journey, he admitted, โ€œIt took a while, but Iโ€™m finally here.โ€ He spoke about his transformation as a testament to Godโ€™s power, encouraging others with his words: โ€œIf [God] can do this for me, thereโ€™s nothing He canโ€™t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.โ€

Denzel Washingtonโ€™s spiritual milestone was made even more special with the support of his wife of 41 years, Pauletta Washington, who stood proudly by his side during the emotional ceremony.

โ€œForty-six years later, here Iโ€™m still standing next to him as only God will have it,โ€ Pauletta shared, her words highlighting the coupleโ€™s enduring bond and unwavering faith.

Denzel is not afraid of people’s criticism

Denzel Washingtonโ€™s baptism marked a significant milestone in his spiritual journey, one he has spoken about candidly in recent months. In a November interview with Esquire, the two-time Oscar winner reflected on how his faith shapes his life, even amidst the often superficial world of Hollywood.

โ€œI donโ€™t care what anyone thinks,โ€ Denzel Washington boldly stated, addressing the challenges of discussing faith in his industry. โ€œTalking about the fear part of itโ€”you canโ€™t talk like that and win Oscars. You canโ€™t talk like that and party. You canโ€™t say that in this town.โ€

Washington, however, emphasized his newfound freedom in expressing his beliefs. โ€œIโ€™m free now. Itโ€™s not talked about in this town. Itโ€™s not talked about. Itโ€™s not fashionable. Itโ€™s not sexy. But that doesnโ€™t mean people in Hollywood donโ€™t believe,โ€ he said.

Denzel also dismissed the very notion of โ€œHollywoodโ€ as a cohesive entity, writing, โ€œThereโ€™s no such thing called Hollywood anyway. What does that even mean? That, to me, means a street called Hollywood Boulevard.โ€

The Equalizer starโ€™s baptism has been met with widespread praise from fans and faith communities, further solidifying his reputation as a man who leads by exampleโ€”both in his craft and his personal life.
